<br />MAYORS <br />County of Essex <br /> <br />INTRODUCTION <br />The Western District Council <br /> <br />-2- <br /> <br />The frrst meeting of the District Council for the <br />western District was held in the Court House, Town of <br />Sandwich, on the 14th day of February, 1842, pur- <br />suant to the ,. Act to provide for the Better Internal <br />Government of that part of the Province which <br />formerly constituted the Province of Upper Canada, <br />by the establishment. of Local Municipal Authorities <br />therein. .. <br />Act 4 and 5, Viet. Cap. 10 went into effect <br />January 1st. 1842. Representatives were present from <br />the following townships which comprised the County <br />of Essex: Anderdon, Colchester, Gosfield. Maidstone, <br />Malden, Mersea, Rochester and Sandwich. <br />From Kent: Camden. Chatham, Dover East and <br />West. Harwich. Howard, Olford, Raleigh, Romney, <br />Tilbury East, Tilbury West and Zone. <br />From Lambten: Bosanquet, Dawn, Moore and <br />Enniskillen. Plymbton, Samia, Sombra and Warwick. <br />The said District Council met from time to time in <br />the Court House, Sandwich, until the close of the <br />October session of 1849. This was the last year of the <br />District Council. <br />The Municipal Council of the United Counties of <br />Essex, Kent and Lambton met in the Court House, <br />Sandwich, on the 28th day of January, 1850. Repre. <br />sentatives were present from aU the above-mentioned <br />municipalities in the County of Essex with the <br />exception of Tilbury West. which had been attached <br />to Kent until the close of 1851. This Council was only <br />in existence for one year. The last session closed on <br />the 11th day of October, 1850. Kent then separated <br />from the union. <br />The Municipal Council of the United Counties of <br />Essex and Lambton met in the Court House, Sand- <br />wich, on the 27th day of January, 1851.
