SUN PARLOR HOME - STAFF
RESPIRATORY OUTBREAK UPDATES
All outbreaks are declared by the Windsor -Essex County Health Unit. The Health Unit will identify the
protocol for the Home (influenza or non -influenza). Staff will be notified by email, signs posted at punch
clocks, the intranet and the weekly Administrator's What's Happening updates. Staff who call in sick
during an outbreak will be asked to describe the symptoms of their illness. The Ward Clerks in
consultation with the Infection Control Lead will track the line lists.
Measures will be implemented as soon as an outbreak is suspected. Supplies (e.g. alcohol based hand
rub, PPE, including gowns, face and N95 masks, etc.) will be made available as necessary.
The protocol for enteric (gastro/stomach issues) outbreaks are outlined in another document.
Non -influenza Resoiratory Outbreaks:
■ Staff and students with any respiratory symptoms should return to work as directed by their
managers in consultation with the Infection Control Lead.
■ If you are unsure if your symptoms are related to the outbreak, call the Infection Control Lead at
ext. 3256.
■ Flu shots and/or Tamiflu are not required.
Influenza Outbreaks:
In an effort to ensure a safe and secure environment for our residents/families, staff, volunteers and
students the Home is seeking each staff member's co-operation to:
✓ Get a flu shot or submit confirmation that you have had a flu shot to the Ward Clerks.
✓ To support ease of access to the flu shot, flu shots are available at the Sun Parlor Home, from
your health care provider/Pharmacy or a Walk-in Clinic.
✓ If you choose not to get a flu shot, make an appointment with your health care provider to get
a prescription for Tamiflu; Requesting a prescription for Tamiflu in advance of an outbreak is
proactive; Tamiflu should only be taken when an influenza outbreak is declared at the Sun
Parlor Home.
o staff who are pregnant, breastfeeding or considering getting pregnant should consult
with their health care provider or Obstetrician prior to taking Tamiflu;
o all medications have side effects; Tamiflu does have side effects — nausea, diarrhea and
vomiting — these symptoms can be alleviated by taking Tamiflu with meals.
o staff should get their Tamiflu prescription from their own regular pharmacy;
o the prescription for Tamiflu is paid for full-time staff; part-time staff filling a prescription
for Tamiflu will be reimbursed for the prescription when the staff member presents a
receipt to the Ward Clerks;
o staff without drug plan coverage for Tamiflu may get their prescription filled by
Remedy'sRx. In order to fill a staff prescription for staff without a drug plan,
Remedy'sRx will need specific information about the staff member.
o the Home will pay the co -pay for the prescription upon presentation of a receipt from
the staff member.
o Staff who have NOT had the flu shot and do NOT take Tamiflu as recommended during
an outbreak are not to report to work as per Respiratory Outbreak 0601-02-02 and
Respiratory Procedure 0601-02-03; According to the Influenza Outbreak Exclusion Policy
0601-15-03.
Pa L, c 11 of 2 November 17th, 2016
