Warden Nelson Santos
3 rd Annual Warden's Luncheon
Windsor Essex Regional Chamber of Commerce
January 15 2010 at Camoes Portuguese Club
Harrow, Ontario
Dear friends, in the spirit of our hosts here at the Camoes
Portuguese Club of Harrow, bem vindo ao nosso clube de
communidade portugues. Bonjour mes amis et bienvenue a notre
clube portugais ici en Harrow. "Welcome"
Head table guests, fellow mayors, deputy mayors, councillors,
ladies, and gentlemen and friends; good afternoon and welcome to
the 3r annual Warden's State of the County address made possible
by our good friends at the Windsor Essex Regional Chamber of
Commerce and their gracious supporters and sponsor, the United
Communities Credit Union.
And while forums like today offer each of us a unique opportunity to
network and renew business acquaintances, it also offers us some
insight into some of our long standing institutions including the
workings of Essex County Council. For many of you, this may be your
third opportunity to hear words from the Warden's office, yet still
wonder why we call our technical -Mayor of the County as the
"Warden ". And you may wonder, just what exactly does a `Warden'
do?
Well, let me start the conversation by definition and origin of the title
and you may be intrigued to know that the status of Warden (from my
not overly exhausted research) dates back to the 13 Century (at
least) with origins found from the Middle English and Anglo- French
with reference from warder to guard.
1
