MARCH SPECIAL SEMON, 1958 M
Through paying a grant, Pelee Island Library received bedis
from the County Library and the support of the County Library.
At the beginning of the year it seemed possible that support from
their council could not be obtained for the Pelee bland Library but
this has been obtained and the board members of the Pelee Island
Library have undertaken through changing library hours and thraU0
giving more service to the public to slow that the Library is a
necessary service in their community. The County Librarian has
again been requested to visit the island in June and speak at the
Continuation, which is also supplied with County Library books, and
to meet with board members and library borrowers in order to en-
courage more use of the library as well as advising on any problems
which have arisen.
In order to check the books which are held in the elementary
schools it has been decided to call in the books from one Township
each year and to effect the necessary repairs to these books during
the summer months. Arrangements have been made to pick UP the
1,020 books held in Sandwich East Township on the 23rd of June
and to visit their schools at the first of the September school el-
change in order that these schools would be without books no longer
than one school week. A total of 1,832 books were repaired in 1954.
FYom January to March 31, 1954 there were 316 boob repaired which
can be favourably compared with the 646 books which have been
repaired from January to March 22, 1955.
In order to help the libraries of the County in book purch"t ar-
rangements have been. made to have books come from Toronto on a
pro forma basis at the time of the Librarians Association meetings
with the idea that the librarians may inspect the books and decide
whether they wish to purchase for their libraries. The County Li-
brary has been purchasing and cataloguing books for the nmkiority et
the libraries within the County of Essex in the primary step towards
centralization of all book purchase.
The first meeting of the 20th Anniversary Conmutlae of the
County Library has been held and arrangements for guest speaker
and location of banquet have been discussed. Plans have also beet
developed for an exhibition at the International Ploughing Valeh and
preparatory work has been done for this with resins no& to
various publishing houses for displays.
(Signed) A.
