AA C YAK <br />VOLUME 5, SPRING 2010 <br />2010 promises to be a busy year on many fronts. Ontario will further its <br />work on new Standards. Our local municipalities and their respective <br />AAC's will continue to work on implementing changes at the local level. <br />And...towards the end of this year, municipal elections will be held again. <br />Thank you to those of you who have participated in working toward our <br />common vision of a better, more barrier -free life for all. <br />The Essex County Accessibility Advisory Committee is diligently working towards <br />another great day of learning and networking - our 8 Annual Opening Doors and <br />Minds Workshop. This year's event w i l l be held on Thursday, October 28, 2010 at <br />the St. Nicholas Macedonian Eastern Orthodox Church Hall, 5225 Howard Avenue, <br />LaSalle, Ontario. <br />Speakers this year will include: <br />• David Lepofsky - Executive Director of the AODA Alliance and Solicitor and <br />advocate for human rights; <br />• Danny McCoy - Paralympic Sailor <br />• Brian Hillman, Planner for the Town of Tecumseh and Larry Silani, Planner <br />for the Town of LaSalle will discuss planning and designing communities to <br />accommodate our aging population; <br />• Karen Gignac, Canadian Mental Health Association will discuss mental health <br />in the workplace; <br />• Rosemary Fiss, Dementia Advisor, Ontario Alzheimer's Society, local chapter <br />w i l l talk about the rising tide of cases of dementia as our population ages; <br />• Anthony Gomez, Assistive Technologist with the University of Windsor w i l l <br />take about the transition for students with disabilities as they enter <br />University and the assistive technology available to them; <br />• Rob Leverty, Executive Director, Ontario Historical Society will present the <br />Accessibility Tool kit for Historical Organizations and Institutions; and <br />• Dr. Saadia Ahmad, Director of Psychology at Hotel Dieu Grace Hospital will <br />talk about non - verbal learning disabilities. <br />Registration details w i l l be posted on the County of Essex website <br />www.countyofessex.on.ca by June 1, 2010.
