This is where it gets interesting as my position is noted to be `one
having care or charge of something' and offers responsibilities as a
guardian or keeper of sorts.
A dictionary definition offers Warden to be the governor of a town,
district or fortress. Now I know we have Fort Malden within our
County, but that jurisdiction where canon fire is often still heard during
celebratory festivals in Amherstburg, well I'll just leave those volleys
in the capable hands of Mayor Wayne Hurst. Thus the only other
fortress that I have seen as of late, is one depicted in a recent daily
newspaper of record in our region. The image, as I recall, clearly
shows a highly guarded and secure domain named Fort Eddie. In my
humble opinion, it appears Mayor Francis had all well in hand
protecting that fortress, thus my role again as a guardian is as they
say in legalese "ultra vires" or for those Latin aficionados, simply it is
outside of my jurisdiction and domain.
Another definition and common misconception of Warden are those
that have asked which prison am I in charge of? While I do not claim
to be a chief official over any cell block or can I offer freedom from the
sentencing of prisoners, some have suggested that I impose a
lockdown during some council meetings or even assign members to
solitary confinement for a period of time. I've certainly resisted such
encouragement to date and all of my county councillors are sure to
support me on that note.
2
